Cooperation with the vocational college in Bergisch Gladbach

July 2011

"It is not very obvious that the lubrication- and maintenance-free igus® products find a wide range of applications even in furniture," Manuela Abbing, a subject teacher for wood and CAD at the Bergisch Gladbach vocational college. Having recently become aware of the igus® products, she wanted to know more about it and try out their applications.

Checkmate, thanks to polymer bearings

June 2011

The YES® college support from igus® assists the junior engineers in Dresden in the construction of the winning robot with free products and expertise. Among these are iglidur® G polymer plain bearings, igubal® rod end bearings, DryLin® T and DryLin® W linear guides and xiros® polymer ball bearings. "We wanted a reliable solution that is free from lubrication and maintenance and runs smoothly and quietly. Thus we could exclude not only a potential source of error, but also save weight and achieve better agility. Thus igus® made an important contribution to our victory," says Martin Pfanne from TURAG.

robolink project. igus® focuses on the young

July 2010

igus® has been intensely engaging engineering students for years and supports them through its university platform Y. E. S (Young Engineers Support). Through the constant search for intelligent and creative minds, among others, beta testers could be obtained for the robolink project.
Thereby 4 teams of students made it their task to conceive, design and construct a drive for a multi-axis articulated arm consisting of 2 robolink joints.

Factory tour

June 2010

On Friday, 25/06/2010, igus® opened its doors to the department of Design and Plastic Machinery of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Construction of a copy milling device for the yacht industry

May 2010

Mareike Herget from Baden-Württemberg Dual University in Heidenheim designed a copy milling device using various products from the DryLin® range, on which rudders can be produced in foam or wood for sailing boats in small runs. At a later point in time, the aim is to equip this with drive systems, so that free forms can also be created using a CNC control system. The design of the unit is similar to a 3-axis CNC portal milling machine, as is usually used in wood and plastic machining.

A roller coaster for "Jugend Forscht", the youth science competition

April 2010

Jonas Adams, Matthias and Felix Willberger Lentes, 10th grade students of Kurfürst Balduin Gymnasium (high school) in Münstermaifeld, constructed a miniature roller coaster, complete with elevator for this year's Jugend Forscht, and of course it was sponsored by us. Plain bearings and chains were built for this (the latter were used in the power supply for the lift).
The starting point is the elective subject MINT, which combines mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. Of course, many hours of free time were also spent working on the functional model. Please visit the homepage of the three using the link below. We say: All due respect for so much creativity and technical know-how and we are glad about the early promotion of technical skills.

Guest at the Nicolaus-August-Otto vocational college

March 2010

Real innovation coupled with economic production and relevance in everyday life is seldom found. On 10 March seven groups, each with 3-5 vocational students, from the disciplines of automotive engineering and bodywork, and vehicle technology, proved that they have found this special mixture and that too in breathtaking time: From the initial ideas to the construction, the students took just 7 weeks. More in the blog.

The Ballbot - Innovation of movement

March 2010

And who invented it? That's right, the Swiss. With igus® bearings, among other things, a robot is being developed right now at Zurich at the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich), which stands on a ball, moves freely and can tilt up to 20°. This wonderfully agile invention can be used in both office and household. As messenger or entertainment robot, the application areas are diverse. Michael Neunert describes the progress of the BallBot thus: "In the meantime, the Ballbot increasingly takes shape and the mechanical parts (except the cover) have been manufactured and assembled. Linear bearings and shafts provided by you are also part of the prototypes. Fortunately they work very well as planned! We say: Glad to collaborate again, with so much innovation! Initial images of movements may be viewed at the following link.

Students of wood and design build work table prototypes

October 2009

Kudos to the two students Georg Scheuerer and Daniel Aichner (Schulen für Holz und Gestaltung Garmisch-Partenkirchen/School of Wood and Design, Garmisch-Partenkirchen) for their achievement in designing, who produced a work table on their own which could possibly get rid of some of the well-known problems of conventional work surfaces. The surface can be easily moved by wheels and compressed air, height can be adjusted by means of adjustment bars and the work table can be easily and securely covered. igus® parts were also used in the prototype and show the variety of the products. This shows that igus® plastics are also helpful for the wood-working industry.

First semester students receive an igus® welcome pack

September 2009

What a nice way to start life at the university! At the beginning of their studies, first semester students of FH Bonn-Sieg in the department of "Applied Natural Sciences" received bags full of useful things from igus®. Among other things, the obligatory comfort food in the form of chocolate and moreover hands-on product samples, as students with emphasis on "Chemistry with Materials Science" in particular will have to deal with plastic processing in their daily studies. The approximately 650 students were happy and able to start their studies with a zest for action and the good feeling of being supported.
