Desert heat and Siberian frost

Maintenance-free polymer bearings in mobile and stationary saw mills of the SERRA Maschinenbau GmbH

Every one of these saw mills is a customer-specific unit production. It is used either in Germany or in another location in the world. The requirements on the functionality are always the same. The saw mill should function in any weather, operate without problems and should be easy to service and maintain. Lubricant-free plastic plain bearings and linear bearings in the process master all the tasks.

"From Dubai to Sumatra, from Siberia to Panama – there is no place on earth where our powerful saw mills are not used," says Hans Fritz, Managing Director of the SERRA Maschinenbau GmbH in Rimsting. "From low-priced entry models for the hobbyist sawyer up to the highly professional saw mills, we deliver a tailor-made solution for every requirement. In the process the components, which proved its worth in the demanding application conditions of wood processing, complied with all other requirements, for example in machine and plant construction.

Impacts, chippings, sawdust

Parching heat in the deserts, numbing frost in Siberia, extreme atmospheric humidity in the rainforests: The weathering cannot have any influence on the function of the mobile and stationary saw mills. In addition are extremely high impact load and vast quantities of wood splinters, saw dust and dust while handling logs during the actual work process. In hourly ratings of up to 10 m³, any timber volume can be sawed safely, quickly and flexibly. "We deliver qualitatively high-value machines and are always up front in technical advancements," says the director of the design office, Manfred Rosam. "We offer technically mature solutions to our customers. Since some years, we have been increasingly using plastic plain bearings in many points in our saw mills. They prove their worth in extremely tough operating conditions, are lubricant-free and moreover are easy to mount," says Rosam pointing out some advantages.

Up to 40 tribologically optimized polymer bearings from the bearings specialist igus® GmbH, Cologne, are used especially in the successful model "Montana", the mobile wide-belt saw mill for trunk diameters up to 90 cm. The professional saw mill was presented in the second half of 2006 and are successfully used worldwide in the meantime. Here the plain bearing made of "iglidur® J" proves its worth exemplarily in the angle stops and the roughing tap. In level compensation, the "DryLin®" linear plain bearings with "iglidur® J" liners show their strengths. The flexible guide system "DryLin® W" is used likewise with liner in the saw blade guide. The "iglidur® J is best suited for most linear applications due to its low-wear and low-friction properties. Hence numerous igus® linear plain bearings are equipped with this material.

Wood is processed on any site

More and more forest owners, craftsmen, farmers or sawyers know the advantages of the mobile saw mills: The saw arrives on four wheels anytime at any site where the wood is to be processed. Whether it is planks, beams or bars, various model sizes and price classes fulfill every customer requirement. "Today we have over 1000 mobile and stationary units in use worldwide," reports CEO Hans Fritz. "We are one of the leading manufacturers with over 400 wide-belt saw mills sold in Germany alone. " Manfred Rosam, director of the design office: "We want to offer innovations to our customers continuously. First of all, the topic of weight saving plays a great role in our efforts. Here the plastic bearings from igus® naturally plays a special role. “

The light but rugged polymer bearings are used in the saw mill at all points with rotating or sliding movements. They replace ball bearings or lubricated steel-on-steel guides. The level compensation makes it particularly suitable for extremely rough use. Here every trunk is individually leveled, the wood clamped and pressed on the support plates. The "iglidur® J" material for the linear guide lamination ensures excellent coefficients of friction. It has been designed especially for linear applications. The "DryLin®" linear guide system is a dry running system, which means it self-lubricates and is extremely dirt-repellent and rugged. "We've been using the linear guide lamination in various saw mills for about six years. They proved their worth from the start," testifies Manfred Rosam.
