Formula 1 in schools

Following the tracks of Schumacher & co.

The international project "Formula 1 in Schools" give pupils the chance to get really close to the action. Not with the truly "greats", yet completely on their own. All the roles of a racing team are taken over here and personally divided among the pupils. Be it in the role of a team manager, constructor, production engineer, marketing manager or graphic designer. The teams are made up of 3-6 pupils and in this season an estimated 2 million pupils have taken part. Since the competition was set up in 1999, approx. 12 million pupils have taken part in total.

The task areas

The pupils must overcome some difficult tasks in their teams. For instance they must design a car on the computer with the help of CAD software. Afterwards the model designed on the computer is cut out of a block of balsa wood by means of a CNC-controlled cutter. In the next step the bodywork is professionally painted. The rest of the car is then assembled. A CO² gas cartridge is used to power the car. This accelerates the racing car to approx. 130 km/h over a 20 m racing track. The team's work is presented on a stand, which at the same time acts as a pit lane. For this purpose, a presentation worked on by the pupils is given to a jury. What is more, the whole thing must also be financed. The pupils come into play again here, as they must find sponsors for their team.

Members of the "BETAGREEN" team

It can go like this

The BETAGREEN team appeared as a newcomer in 2009 and really cleaned up straight away. BETAGREEN is made up of the pupils:

Niklas Hagenow (team manager/constructor)
Johannes Rohwer (graphic designer/webmaster)
Arved Bruns (production engineer)

Moritz Mönster (marketing manager)

The 5 pupils won the Nordmettall Cup (North German Championships) on
05.04.2009 and the German Championships on
28.04.2009 in Hanover.

Thanks to its success, BETAGREEN was allowed to appear for Germany at the World Championships in London in September 2009. Which it did with great success - BETAGREEN took 5th place!
The best 31 teams in the world competed at the World Championships. The team also achieved the best German result at a World Championships in "F1 in schools". BETAGREEN was also presented with the "INNOVATIVE THINKING AWARD" for its sprung single wheel suspension.
The car achieved a German record at the world championships and therefore made it to the podium. With a time of 1.076 sec (over 20m), the team managed the third fastest time of the entire world championships.

Application of igus®

BETAGREEN is supported by the company igus® with ball bearings (B180 xiros® glass). The ball bearings ensured a low friction resistance even under extreme loads. These extreme loads are reached for approx. 1 sec at top speed. (14,000 rpm). The ball bearings are pressed into the wheels.
