Billets of fibrous material travelling on a conveyor system had to have a known load applied to them and the resultant thickness measured to an accuracy of 0.1mm at a throughput of 30 packs per minute. The mounting for the transducers used to measure the thickness had to be adjustable, but rigid. The fibrous nature of the product may have been a concern for ordinary bearings as no lubrication could be allowed. A DryLin® W polymer linear bearing system was used to support the transducers, providing the rigidity required for the 0.1mm consistent accuracy, along with smooth adjustment. The bushes needed no lubrication and were not affected by dust.
