Plastic technology specialist igus® gives student training

igus® GmbH, market leader in energy supply systems and plastic plain bearings, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Cologne-based Rhein-Gymnasium. In the scope of the new subject "MINT" (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, technology), students of classes 8, 9 and 10 will be taught the disciplines of "robotics" and "plastics chemistry" from now on. This includes the subjects "principles of design", "principles of friction and wear" and "tribologically optimized polymer materials". The school lessons are conducted at the igus® factory in Cologne.

The partnership signed on December 11 is a joint initiative of igus® with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Cologne, Bonn/Rhein-Sieg and Aachen as well as the district government and educational authority of Cologne. Gregor Berghausen, managing director of apprenticeship and in-service training of the Cologne chamber of commerce, handed over the certificate to the igus® managing director, Frank Blase, at a ceremonial function. Frank Blase: "It is important for the location of Germany to gain students for the technical and engineering professions. For that the youth should become enthusiastic quite early. The partnership can contribute toward that"

The education of high school students moreover suits the comprehensive university and technical college services already offered to technical academics by igus since five years under the name "YES" The abbreviation stand for "Young Engineering Support". At www.igus.de/yes, the company offers to students among other things cost-free product samples, CDs, support in student research and examination projects, not to mention guest lectures and excursions on request.
