Deep-sea resistance

Penetrometer

This penetrometer is used for soil analysys in the deep sea. A carrying cable connects it to the ship. The penetrometer is provided with its own battery, which allows automatic working up to 6,000 metres of sea depth. For the geotechnical research, a tube with a measuring unit at its end is driven with rotational movements up to 50 metres into the sediment. An energy cable inside the tube provides the measuring unit with energy, also data cables are inserted there. The designers used a twisterband e-chain® from igus® and robust chainflex® cables that are corrosion-resistant as well, so that the cables cant screw in or break.
