Even stainless steel corrodes

The extruded material (cables for bowden cables) exits the extruder and is directed through a trough with well water to cool down. This process involves guiding the cable on rollers that run on pressed in unsealed stainless steel ball bearings. These are fully immersed in water. In spite of the stainless steel configuration (See figure 1), these needed to be replaced in regular intervals due to corrosion.

After clarifying the corrosion characteristics of stainless steels, we were able to successfully conduct tests and installed our xiros® polymer ball bearings as drop-in replacements for the stainless steel bearings (see figure 2), which resulted in a significant increase of the service life.
